Environmental Lakes Area to be Closed
The ELA is a long-running freshwater research facility located in northwestern Ontario. During its over 40 years of activity, research conducted at ELA has included a wide range of topics, often studied at a large scale, including studies of algal blooms, climate change, mercury pollution, hydroelectric reservoir development, endocrine-disrupting chemicals and nano-silver particles.

The Water Institute Announces its 2012 Workshop Winners
The Water Institute is pleased to financially support the development of workshops or small symposia that enhance interdisciplinary water research, facilitate university-government-private sector partnerships and build knowledge and capacity to address emerging water management issues. The first Water Institute call for workshop proposals was conducted in 2011. Three applicants were awarded funding.

Two MASc Students to be Recognized by AWWA for their Masters Theses
Two recent Master students have been recognized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) for their Masters theses. Ryan Snider and Ahmed El-Hadidy, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, are the first and second place recipients, respectively, of the 2012 AWWA Academic Achievement Awards for best Master's thesis. This award recognizes the theses as the best Master's theses from the United States, Canada, and Mexico on the basis of originality, practical application, value to the water supply field, potential value as a reference, and overall clarity.
